We came into spring with most of our bees looking good, with only a few losses over winter and some storm Eunice damage to one apiary. Thankfully the other sites were not affected.

Oilseed rape flowered early this year and although the weather was fine it wasn’t warm enough to produce much nectar for the bees. The hives in the plum orchards have fared much better and we have harvested a good crop of honey in the past few weeks. The growers were really pleased with the pollination provided by the bees and it looks to be a bumper fruit crop this year. They were so pleased in fact they have asked for more hives to be situated there next year, so we are already planning that in for next season.

Early swarms were at a minimum this spring and we kept all our bees in our hives, maybe not always in the same one they started in! The good weather means that new season queens have mated successfully and are busy building strong colonies.

The hot weather in mid-June has really kick-started swarming again, not ours but we have been called out to lots of others including three in one day and a visit to the new Costa coffee in Evesham.

We have enjoyed the company of a number of people attending bee experience days in recent weeks. It has been a pleasure to show them our home apiary and give them an insight into the inner workings of the hive. We are looking forward to welcoming many more over the summer.

As June comes to a close we will step up our queen rearing programme and hope the fair weather continues so we get a good summer honey harvest.
